��Ƶ the Lecture: Growing up in the shadow of The End of History and the supposed triumph of western democracy, it seemed that liberalism was stable, inevitable and perhaps even permanent. But this declaration turned out to be premature. This lecture surveys our modern relationship to liberalism and its promise, and interrogates how the social and political institutions tasked with protecting and reinforcing liberalism have come up short.

��Ƶ the Speaker: Elamin Abdelmahmoud is a culture writer for BuzzFeed News and host of CBC’s pop culture show Pop Chat, and author of the bestselling memoir Son of Elsewhere. He was a founding co-host of the CBC Politics podcast Party Lines, and he is a contributor to The National’s At Issue panel. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, the Globe and Mail, and others. When he gets a chance, he writes bad tweets.

The Department of Political Studies is hosting a “Research and Teaching” luncheon with three short presentations from recently retired faculty who will share their thoughts on “advice they wished someone had told them at the start of their academic career". The participants are Grant Amyot (Comparative Politics and Political Theory), Keith Banting (Canadian and Comparative politics), and Kim Nossal (International Relations). After the presentations there will be a Q & A and group discussion for about an hour.

This event should be of particular interest to tenure-track faculty, post-docs and graduate students interested in pursuing an academic career.

This luncheon is limited to the first 25 (invited) registrants.

"Politics Hurts but it Matters"

Maryam Monsef is the Founder and CEO of ONWARD. She is a globally recognized feminist, leader, and changemaker. This Afghan-Canadian activist comes from a long line of strong and resilient women. Against all odds, she escaped war and survived poverty and displacement. She rose from refugee, to community organizer, to Cabinet Minister where she drove social and economic justice files for the Government of Canada at home and abroad.

Maryam has led public policy files at the highest levels. In 2018 and 2019, she was recognized by Apolitical, along with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama and Malala, as one of the Top 20 global influencers on gender equality.

Maryam has spent thousands of hours delivering powerful speeches, and giving media appearances, from Davos, G7, G20 and the UN, to hot seat political shows, classrooms and workplaces. She is a member of the National Speakers Bureau and a Traill College Fellow at Trent University.

John Finucane is an Irish lawyer, and Sinn Féin politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Belfast North constituency of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom since the 2019 general election. He previously served on the Belfast City Council and as mayor of Belfast.
